Subject:ND Rugby in the 80's

Great to see Rugby back at ND!
Some of my greatest memories of ND were days spent on the pitch at Stepan Center. I played Second Row and Prop for the Irish from '83 through '87. The history on the site seems to have a gap in the '80's. Contrary to the notes, we were still extremely competitive. While some of the antics before my tenure restricted our travel, we still won several tourneys in the midwest.
Best of luck to the new generation of irish ruggers ... I wish you all may years of great friends and fond memories!

Subject:nd rugby founding-1962

the notre dame rugby club was founded in early 1962 by bob meir [st.louis]and ken featherstone as coach and moderator.ken was a british expat professor of architecture at nd.a few of the founding members /players were in law school and had experience playing at dartmouth as undergrads.however most of us were frustrated high school football players anxious for a contact sport particularly at then all male notre dame.our first game was 3-0 loss to yale at the commonwealth cup tournament at the university of virginia in march 1962.what we lacked in finess we compensated for in brawn.early stars were mike murphy who played in argentina, coached georgetown and was a top exec at aig in bermuda; ken stinson , chairman of parsons in omaha, frank fee of scarsdale,ny and many others.i have lived in nyc for 40 years, played rugy till i was 35.my oldest son played for bc and now nyac, yougest son is a prop at cal-santa barbara. glad to see nd finally having a rugby club again. all the best, patrick kealy
